This Sonata For Flute and Piano is a virtuosic flute solo by renowned influential French composer Francis Poulenc. Written in 1956-57, this is an elegant, dreamy chamber work and he has demonstrated his obvious compositional skill, also highlighting the French affinity with the sweet sounds of the flute.

The recording that works best, with beautiful sound, conversational fluency and technical brilliance is from the Israeli flautist Sharon Bezaly and Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam, made for the BIS label in 2008. Poulenc’s Sonata of 1957 is dedicated to the memory of that champion of twentieth-century chamber music, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The French affection for the flute is brilliantly demonstrated in Francis Poulenc's virtuosic Sonata for Flute and Piano (1956). Each of the work's three movements is fluent and graceful in different ways. The first movement, Allegro malincolico, sounds sweetly sad rather than melancholy.
